What is a Student Health Record?

The Student Health Record is a secure and confidential interactive personal health record. It not only stores personal health information for you and your loved ones, but it provides interactive programs that help you better understand medical conditions and medications. You can create, manage and share your personal health information with your physician, or another care giver in case of an emergency.

How much does this cost?

There is an initial one time charge of $ 5.00* to register your child and create the Student Health Record. The initial $5.00 is non refundable once the record is created. For every subsequent year that the child is in attendance at school, a small annual maintenance fee of $5.00 will be billed to your credit card. For your convenience a recurring charge for $5.00 per year for the first 3 years will be billed to your card on each anniversary date. This can be cancelled 10 days prior to the next billing date by sending an email to support@studenthealthrecord.ca.

Why is building a Student Health Record a good idea?

Who controls the Student Health Record and who is protecting the privacy of my child’s personal health data?

Your health information is securely stored on the RWR network servers. Although the Student Health Record available to you and the school board via the Internet, it is also secure; just as online banking and online stock accounts are available via the Internet but secure and only accessible by using a user ID and password.

Who can view my Student Health Record?

You control access to your Student Health Record and you provide access privileges to the school board administrator who in turn can provide this to a doctor or emergency personnel. This is similar to a doctor granting access to your medical record to his nurse or hospital staff.

Who should have a Student Health Record?

Every student whether attending elementary, secondary school or college. While the student may not have major medical conditions, there is basic information that should be accessible by the school for any student at any time. This would include insurance information, allergies, vaccinations and emergency physician and parent contact information. In addition, the Student Health Record provides health and wellness tips and reminders. If your child takes medications or has medical conditions; has been hospitalized or had surgeries, all the more reasons that a Student Health Record is needed when an emergency arises at the school.

What if I don't have all the information I need to fill out and Student Health Record right now? What if I mistype the information in this record; Can I make changes?

Once you have created your child’s Student Health Record, you can make any changes you deem necessary by log in on the site. The Summary/Detail page will contain a summary of your information, with links to go directly to any section or any entry to make additions, changes, or to remove information. You have complete control over your interactive Student Health Record at all times.

How does information in my Student Health Record get updated? What if I build a Student Health Record and then just forget about it? How will it be updated and ready in case of an emergency?

Your Student Health Record is something that you must own and initiate. For the record to be complete, you must contribute some information. At some future time interfaces to electronic medical records in physician offices and hospitals, as well as links to allow health plans to update the Student Health Record will be in place, but the record remains under your control. Your Student Health Record will send you a quarterly reminder to keep the record current.

How does this information get to a hospital ER or doctor in an emergency?

You should print a copy of your Student Health Record to keep in a safe place as you would your passport or drivers license. You or the school can access the record by student and provide this to a physician or EMS from any computer with internet access. School bus drivers should carry a copy of each student’s record on their weekly pick up route. You are also encouraged to identify a trusted third party to whom you grant privileges to the Student Health Record access information. In the event of a medical emergency, this information could be important should you not be available. If possible, this person should be the same individual identified as your second emergency contact in your SHR.

What are the computer/internet requirements to use this system?

The Student Health Record works best when used with Microsoft Internet Explorer Version 5.5 or Netscape Version 7 or higher. Both browsers support the 128-bit security encryption level required to access all the features of the Student Health Record.

Should I print a copy of the Student Health Record?

Multiple printing options are available. You can print your entire Student Health Record or just selected parts of it, for your files and for your medical chart. But since the Student Health Record is available via the Internet from anywhere in the world, it is not as important to print the record to ensure access.
